Walmart continued to have a stronghold on in-store shopping. Nearly the same percentage of shoppers (63%) purchased from a Walmart store as shopped on Amazon.com (65%) in the past 3 months. Walmart dominated in-store shopping for “essential” categories like grocery, OTC medications, vitamins and supplements, cleaning supplies, beauty and personal care, and pet supplies.

Social media was an influential shopping venue for consumers. 40% of consumers searched for products to buy while using social media. More than half (56%) of consumers considered purchasing products recommended to them while shopping online.

Brand accountability and transparency were important to consumers. 58% of consumers said a brand’s social activism impacts their impression of a brand. More than half of all consumers said they would be more likely to buy from brands or companies that treat their employees well, are transparent, and are locally sourced or eco-friendly.

Consumers adopted emerging and financial tech. Nearly half of all consumers (48%) preferred shopping from retailers that offer flexible payment options, and 44% of consumers used deal-finding browser extensions or plug-ins when shopping online.
Between August 6-9, 2021, Jungle Scout conducted an anonymous survey among a panel of 1,100 U.S. consumers about their buying preferences and behaviors. Respondents represent every U.S. state, all genders, and ages 18 to 75+, as well as all employment types and varying income levels.
